Are the operational definitions of 'tie strength' convincing?

Tie strength gets operationalized via frequency/intimacy/reciprocity, but these don't always move together, and self-reported tie strength is noisy. A critique worth raising with students: how much of the empirical result depends on a particular, possibly circular, definition of 'weak'?
